Handwriting of the 'Shoel Umeshiv'. Answer on Back of Responsa Letter. Lvov 5634 [1874]

Handwritten and signed response by Rav Yosef Shaul HaLevi Nathanson, author of 'Shoel Umeshiv', on the back of a responsa letter sent to him by Rav Shabtai Braunfeld, Av Beis Din of ערדא-טעלעק.

The 'gaon of gaons'- Rav Yosef Halevi Nathanson, author of 'Shoel Umeshiv' (5568-5635) was the Rav of Lvov for around twenty years. He was a Torah giant and one of the greatest rabbinic authorities of his generation. Jews from all corners of the land would send him halachic questions, requests for approbations and requests for semicha. He was known as one who is 'holy from the womb'- even in his youth he was highly regarded by the leaders of the generation- headed by the Chasam Sofer (see eulogy of the Chasam Sofer's son-in-law in sefer 'Tikkun Shlomo' page 99-102). When Rav Chaim of Sanz turned to him in a question regarding Mikvaos, he described him at the letter's head: 'Sinai, who uproots mountains, the right pillar, strong hammer, crown of knowledge and wisdom, light of Israel, honorable holy shining light of Israel's majesty" (Shoel Umeshiv Responsa, Taneina edition, volume I chapter 24)

The response was written in Adar, 5634, exactly one year before his passing- in Adar 5635. His weakness is apparent in his handwriting.

Rav Shabtai Braunfeld, Av Beis Din of ערדא-טעלעק was an outstanding gaon in Torah and a disciple of the Mahari Asad. He discoursed in Halacha with the leaders of the generation. Passed away in 5678.
