FREMONT JOHN C.: (1813-1890) American Explorer and Major General in the American Civil War. Fremont was also the first candidate of the Republican Party for the office of American President. A.L.S., J. C. Fremont, one page, 8vo, New York, 14th January 1884, to Miss. Merrell. Fremont states that he has received his correspondent's notes and regrets that she experienced 'so much trouble to obtain so small a thing as my autograph', further thanking her for her kind expressions and 'the favourable light in which you look upon such service as I have been able to render the country'. One very small, neat tear to the right edge, only very slightly affecting one word of text but not the signature, otherwise VG
