TOLSTOY-OBOLENSKY MARIA: (1870-1906) Countess Maria Lvovna Tolstoy. Daughter of Leo Tolstoy. A good and lengthy A.L.S, Marie Obolenskaya, four pages, 8vo, Moskovsko Kyrskou, St. Lazarevo, 29th August 1903, to Mr. Widmer, in French. Tolstoy responds to her correspondent stating in part `You have kindly asked for news regarding my health´s improvement once back in Russia. And I do so with pleasure, taking this occasion to once more tell you that I am grateful for your kindness and for the care received from you. I will always remember with pleasure the time spent at the Colline.´ Marie Tolstoy further reports on her trip back to Russia, about her health, and explains how tired she feels after walking, her difficulty to breath normally after small efforts, despite the good weather in Russia, and says `We are starting to make all the necessary works at home to face winter, with double windows hermetically closed, fireplaces ready, covered floors, etc.. in Russia this is a big affair, and you must take it seriously if you do not wish to freeze in winter.´ and further referring to her father `On our way back we stopped and spent a week at my father´s home; he said that I was looking very much recovered. We found him too in very good health and working a lot.´ A clean bold black ink text written by Maria, and referring to her father´s health and work. Letters of Maria Tolstoy are scarce as a result of her early death at the age of 36, four years before her father´s death. Folded. EX Auguste-Henri Widmer (1853-1939) the doctor who took care of Marie Tolstoy-Obolensky during her stay at the clinic La Colline at Territet, near Montreux, in Switzerland. Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) Russian Novelist and Philosopher, widely considered one of the greatest novelists of all time. The intense works Leo Tolstoy is involved in, which Marie refers to, were the lecture of a biography of Emperor Nicolas I, the corrections to his work Hadji Murat (1896-1904), and his philosophical work Thoughts of Wise Men. Maria Tolstoy was always considered her father´s favourite child. He would say a month after her death and referring to the last minutes of her life, that ''That quarter of an hour is one of the most important and most grievous of my existence.¨
