Tzror HaChaim. Amsterdam, 1820. First Edition

Protest against the "innovators" (the Reform) who want to make changes in the prayer service and synagogue customs, by Rabbi Aryeh Leib of Lowenstam. One of the first books opposing Reform. Polemic.

The author attacks the Reform regarding musical accompaniment to prayers, mingling of men and women, prayer and blessings with uncovered heads, changes in the texts of prayers and blessings, changes to the accent and cantillation in Torah reading from Ashkenazic to Sephardic and the reverse, and more. The author was a rabbi in Mezeritch and in Emden and passed away in 1839. In this book, he disputes the works of Eliezer Leiberman - Nogah Tzedek, Kin'at HaEmet and Ohr Noga, that were published in Dessau (1818) and preached Reform.

The book includes nine parts with a separate (half) title page for each part. The flyleaf bears owners' signatures of 'the youth Nachman Bahara"m of Amsterdam.'

[6], 81 [1] leaf. 19 cm. There are copies with 2 leaves of subscribers. Thick paper.

Fine condition. Aging stains. Detached last leafs and back binding. Original binding, worn.
