Siftei Renanot, Yitzchak Ha'Levi of Stanov – Berlin 1773 – Rare
The author: Yitzchak Ha'Kevi of Stanov (1732-1804), a complex and controversial figure. He was born in Stanov and lived in Berlin in order to sturdy with Moshe Mendelson. He used to wear a long coat, similar to the traditional Polish costume; yet underneath, he wore a short suit like the educated Germans. On the one hand, he received agreement to several of his books, among them the book before us, from the greatest of rabbis; on the other hand, he was blamed that he stated that the study of the Talmud should be omitted from the curriculum of Jewish educational institutions since the observation of the Torah was required only in Israel and not in the diaspora. Some of his generation described him as 'half heretic, half believer'. He was blamed of forging books of his imagination and selling them as early manuscripts. He was severely criticized by rabbis of his generation. See the essay of Rabbi Binyamin Shlomo Hamburger, Ha'Ma'ayan 49, b (December 2008) 86-91.
The book is about grammar.
Agreements of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch, rabbinical judge of Berlin, Rabbi Yehezkel, rabbinical judge of Prague, Rabbi Avraham Mordechai, rabbinical judge of Zalkway and several other rabbis who joined the agreements, among them Rabbi Chaim of Sanz, Rabbi Nathan Ashkenazi of Brad and more.
