A. Prayer Book for Girls. Evelina de Rothschild, Miss Landau, Jerusalem, approximately 1935.
"The prayers for Shacharit and Rosh Chodesh, as well as the grace after meals, blessings made upon food and drinks, Sabbath candle blessing, Hanukkah candle blessing and Kri'at Shema…".
Intended for girls. Published by Evelina de Rothschild School for Girls under the management of Miss Hanna Judith Landau. The title page is in English and Hebrew.
Education for girls in Israel had gone through immense changes in our generation. First, the education of girls was done mainly at home, with an emphasis on Judaism and housework. The Evelina de Rothschild School for girls constituted a turning point in the education of girls. On the one hand, the school educated its girls to piety and strict observation of the Jewish laws; on the other, beside the traditional lessons of cooking and sewing, there were geography and science lessons. In addition, it was open to the new national spirit. It was the first school in the Land of Israel to teach only in Hebrew!
The veterans of Jerusalem still remember Miss Landau. She started running the institution at the beginning of the 20th century. As a previous student of the Samson Refael Hirsch School in Frankfurt, she combined Torah with manners and succeeded in receiving the understanding of the Ashkenazic rabbinical circles regarding the school.
Miss Landau was an exceptional educator. She never married and had no children; but the students were all her daughters. She turned Evelina de Rothschild to the most admired school in Jerusalem, with thousands of students.
