בשנת 1907 התגורר באודסה, ועבד כעוזרו של מנחם אוסישקין בניהול "הוועד האודיסאי". הוא פרסם סדרת מסות ביידיש כחלק מתעמולה ציונית בעד הציונות המעשית ונגד תוכנית אוגנדה; על מסותיו היה נוהג לחתום: "פון ציוני פשוט" (יידיש: "מאת ציוני פשוט").
