ERWIN J. ROMMEL
(1891 - 1944) German field marshal whose Afrika Corps threw back repeated British and American assaults in North Africa, later he defended Normandy and ultimately was forced to commit suicide due to his implication in the Hitler bomb plot. Typed D.S., 2pp. 4to., 'Headquarters' [North Africa], Feb. 6, 1942, his approval of the award of the War Merit Cross, 2nd Class with Swords to 13 men in his command. File holes, one slightly affecting the tail end of Rommel's very rushed signature, else fine. These awards were likely made in the successful campaign to take Agedabia and Benghazi.
