HOLLAND M. SMITH
(1882 - 1967) 'Howlin' Mad' Marine Corp general sometimes called the 'father' of modern U.S. amphibious warfare. Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, also commanded Task Force 56 in the battle of Iwo Jima. Excellent signed book, Smith's memoir 'Coral and Brass', (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons), 1949, 289pp. 8vo. Smith signs in black ink on the front flyleaf, adding his rank 'Gen. USMC Ret'd', with a lengthy inscription to FBI agent Bill Murphy, in part: '...There is a close association with Marines and the F.B.I. Each has a wholesome respect for the other...', with the place and date 'La Jolla, Calif. Feb. 17th, 1949'. Bound in blue cloth boards with gilt titles to the spine. Frontis portrait detached but present, shows some bumps to the edges of the covers, with slight toning to the page edges and notable chips, tears and paper loss to the original dust jacket, still very good overall.
