RUDOLF SCHMIDT
(1886 - 1957) Wehrmacht general who commanded the 2nd Panzer Army on the Eastern Front. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. Rare partly-printed D.S., 4pp. 4to., Berlin, May 31, 1934, his questionnaire for the 'Law on the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service', one of the first anti-Semitic laws to be passed in the Third Reich. Implemented in 1933, two months after Hitler's rise to power, the law forced 'non-Aryan' and Communist civil servants to retire, invalidating them from serving as soldiers, teachers, professors, judges, or other government positions. Schmidt, retained in the Reichswehr after serving in World War I, provides this questionnaire to show his eligibility for civil service. He adds his title 'Oberst', indicates he has fought in World War I, and provides a record of his Aryan descendants. Schmidt signs his name in full on the fourth page in black ink. Paper clip indent on first page, paper clip stain on last page, each non-intrusive. Very good condition.
