HINDENBURG LAST FLIGHT COLOGNE 'DROPPED' COVER
Rare cover, carried on last flight of the Hindenburg. Bears four 'Flug-und-Luftshiffhafen Rhein-Main' May 1, 1937 cancels, and the later addition of a Koln cancel (date illeg.). Following cancellation of a fly-over of the Olympia Stadium in Berlin for a Hitler Youth rally due to weather, German-bound mail was dropped over Cologne to be forwarded via another flight. This cover bears a red cachet at bottom indicating that the intended flight was canceled, and the mail was then dropped over Cologne, which was on the route to Lakehurst. Thus, this piece became one of the last pieces of mail delivered by the ill-fated airship before her crash at Lakehurst days later.
