GASTON DOUMERGE
(1863 - 1937) French politician of the Third Republic, President of France from 1924-31, Prime Minister from February to November, 1934. Partly-printed D.S., 1p. 10.25 x 16.25 in., Paris, Feb. 28, 1931, formal acceptance of the credentials of John G. Erhardt who had been nominated to serve as American Consul in Bordeaux. Foxing in margins, mounted, else very good. JOHN G. ERHARDT (1889-1951) served as Consul in Hamburg and later in London under Ambassador Joseph Kennedy. During the war, he was in a high-level State Department position in Washington, where he was involved in the planning of the surrender of Germany and occupation of Germany and Austria. After the war, he served as de facto Ambassador to Austria and as political adviser to Gen. Mark Clark, who led the American occupation military forces in Austria.
