Postcard sent by mail with a Zion Postage Stamp of the Jewish National Fund - Vienna 1902 - Important Zionist Content: The Journey of the Committee to Palestine is in Danger
The postcard was sent to the lawyer Ignaz Kohn (1838-1921) who was the manager of the Austrian train museum and the author of books on the subject. The postcard is written in German in Gothic script. Greetings and a date in Hebrew: "Shalom U'Beracha Av 24 1902 … Be'Birkat Zion". The sender complains that Mr. Kohn did not show up for the appointment and did not arrange a new one. If the members of the committee are not more serious, the (planned) trip to Palestine might be in danger!
It is unclear which committee and what trip to Palestine are referred to. However, the date indicates that it was an important trip since it was extremely difficult to send committees to Palestine in those days. The subject still needs to be explored.
On the postcard there is the "Zion" postage stamp of the Jewish National Fund. The JNF in Vienna issued in 1902 its first postage stamp which was known as "the Zion Stamp" (a blue Star-of-David on white background with the word "Zion" at its center surrounded by olive leafs and two stalks of grain). The stamp was issued in many countries and its value was similar to the value of the smallest coin in each country. Ever since the fifth Zionist congress decided in 1901 to establish the Jewish National Fund, the postage stamps of the JNF served as a symbol of national revival as well as an educational and propaganda tool.
The "Zion Stamp" is on the lower left side of the postcard with a German stamp: "Durch Opfer Nach Zion". Two postmarks of the Vienna post. On the postcard there is a sticker of "returned to the sender" (with a note: the addressee could not be found in this address).
Condition: Very Good.
