"My Beloved! My Wish to Reach to Palestine has Come True!" – Rare Diary of Letters of an Educated Jewish Student – Vienna 1917-1934 – German, a Little Yiddish and Polish
A hard-cover, 70-pages diary with copies of letters in the handwriting of a Jew named Moses, a student of structural engineering at the High Technology Institute in Vienna. He writes to his family and friends in poetic language that describes his difficulties, loneliness and eventually, his immigration to IIsrael.
Examples from his letters:
[October 1922, a letter to his sister, most likely about the difficult political situation in Europe]: "… a full moon outside, black clouds try to cover it. Do you think they will succeed? So that everywhere it will be dark and burdensome? Will it ever be bright again? … How can we bear it? The struggle draws on our time…"
[1929 a letter to Jacob – most likely his brother]: "When I read your letter, I saw before me the complete disgrace of humanity, accompanied by the question Shakespeare had put in Hamlet's mouth. A similar outlook can be found in Strindberg 'Shame on Humanity'. Recall Hamlet's opening phrase: 'to be or not to be, that is the question'. This thought is only phrased differently… one thing I could understand from your words: the war has not yet been won! I feel that I am carried on waves and that the ground is shaking under me".
[5.11.1934]: "My life has greatly changed. In all likelihood, within a year, I am going to live in Palestine. I only need to receive an entry permit".
[Letter to uncle Chary, 1934]: "Dear uncle, I am asking you to write to me about the time in Palestine and your goals there and about the financial situation of our relatives, so that I could evaluate my chances there".
[2.12.34]: "To my dear mother, brothers and sisters. I was delighted to receive your letter … with God's help, I will leave Belgrade on Sunday and take the train to Athens and from there to Piraeus. From there, I will take a ship [a Romanian ship named Dacia] to Jaffa. I will probably arrive in Haifa on 14.12.34".
[19.12.34, Tel Aviv, the house of Nachman Enschel]: "My beloved! My wish to reach Palestine has come true! I am here now. Everyone is fine. I thank you for the letters that awaited me here … I am happy to be here and hope to see you all here … today, someone said "Shalom" [Hebrew script] to me …".
