A heartbreaking letter from the Rabbi of Kehal Adat Yeshurun in Vienna, Rabbi Shmuel Yosef Benedict, requesting a visa to the USA. Austria, 1938.
The letter is addressed to the head of the "Ezrat Torah" organization in New York from December 1938, after the German Anschluss. The rabbi, who felt that the ground was burning under the feet of Vienna's Jews, ordered anyone who listened to him to escape Vienna. He even sent the touching, heartbreaking letter describing the horrible situation of his family and pleading for a visa to the USA. He notes that if he receives a work contract from a synagogue, it might speed up the procedure.
In the letter, the rabbi describes his professional experience as well as that of one of his sons, who also served as a rabbi of a synagogue and community, and of one of his daughters.
Unfortunately, the Rabbi's attempts to save his family and himself failed and they were murdered during the Holocaust. His number in The Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names of Yad Va'Shem is 4928498.
Size: 20x30 cm.
Official blank, clear English handwriting on both sides of the page.
Condition: Very Good.
