Handwritten Halachic Responsa by Harav Yehudah Greenfeld, Av Beis Din of Szentmihály, 1906

Handwritten halachic responsa by Hagaon Harav Yehudah Greenfeld, Av Beis Din Szentmihály, regarding plowing a field on Chol Hamoed in the event that failing to do so will result in severe monetary loss.

Hagaon Harav Yehudah Greenfeld, Av Beis Din of Szentmihály, (~1840-1907) was the son of the famous Harav Shmaya Chassid zt”l of Ihel. (Harav Shmaya was a disciple of Harav Naftali of Ropschitz and the Yismach Moshe who assigned him the title ‘chassid’ due to his supreme piety).
Harav Yehudah Greenfeld was revered by the Rabbanim of his time as a genius who was thoroughly-versed in Torah. He was a chassid of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz and prime disciple of the Kol Aryeh with whom he’d learn privately throughout the long winter nights from sundown until dawn. After his marriage, he settled in the town of Chust, and Maharam Schick often consulted with him on halachic matters.

Among the Hungarian sages whom he ordained was the Admor Rabbeinu Yoel of Satmar who greatly valued this semichah. The Yitav Lev once praised him with the words: “When one forgets a Tosfos in Shas, one can ask R’ Yidele Chuster.”

Harav Yehudah Greenfeld served as Av Beis Din of Szentmihály for 33 years and was succeeded by his son the Maharshag. Several of his responsa were printed in Shu”t Kol Yehudah.

The renowned Lev family traces itself back to the Kol Yehudah. Rabbi Asher Zelig Lev Marisher is the son of Hagaon Harav Mordechai Yehudah, Av Beis Din of Interdam, who was a son-in-law of Harav Yehudah Greenfeld, Av Beis Din of Szentmihály and author of the Kol Yehudah. (Rabbi Asher Zelig was the father of Rabbi Shmaya Lev, Av Beis Din of Kerestir, author of Bnei Shmaya, and father of Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Lev of Tomoshov, who authored Moshe Yedaber.

Szentmihály, 1906. Page size: 15x22 cm. Double-sided. Printed in Shu”t Kol Yehudah Ch. 27.
