Letter by Harav Shaul Brach, Av Beis Din of Kashoy, Regarding Changing the Nusach of Prayer from Ashkenaz to Sephard. Carei, 1922.

Letter by Hagaon Harav Shaul Brach, Av Beis Din of Kashoy, regarding a congregation that wished to change its nusach of prayer from Ashkenaz to Sephard.

There is a longstanding debate between the Chasam Sofer and Divrei Chaim regarding changing a nusach of prayer from Ashkenaz to Sephard. The Maharam Schick, who was Harav Shaul Brach’s rebbi and mentor, concurred with the Chasam Sofer, who was his rebbi, that this should be avoided. In this specific case, however, Harav Shaul Brach writes that, even according to the Divrei Chaim’s opinion, the congregation should not make the change without a majority consent.

Hagaon Harav Shaul Brach of Nitra, Av Beis Din of Kashoy, (1865-1940) was among the leading Hungarian sages in the pre-Holocaust era and a prolific author who established a large yeshivah and cultivated hundreds of talmidim. As a prime disciple of both Maharam Schick and the Chassan Sofer, he was renowned for his zealous pursuit of truth and battles to preserve tradition. He absorbed his love of chassidus from the Yitav Lev of Satmar, Shinova Rebbe and Belzer Rebbes.

Carei, 1922. Handwritten, autographed letter. Page size 22x14 cm. Good condition.
