The Stropkover Rebbe Harav Yechezkel Shraga Lifschitz Halberstam’s Machzor for the Yomim Nora’im

Contains handwritten traditional wording & melodies of the Halberstam-Stropkov dynasty.

Personal Machzor used by Harav Yechezkel Shraga Lifchitz Halberstam of Stropkov during the High Holy Days when he ascended to the pulpit to lead his congregation. In the margins, he inscribed the Holy Names Ha-va-ya and Ad-nus in order to arouse his concentration and intensity in prayers and focus on the holiness of these Names.

In the pages of this Machzor, the Rebbe handwrote several amendments into the text of the prayer following the traditions of his ancestors. He also inserted markings to indicate the melodies he sang in the course of prayers on these Days of Awe as ‘Niggun Mashiach’, ‘Shalom aleichem by Bobov, ’ and explanations to several piyyutim.

The Rebbe wrote combinations of Holy Names on the top left side of every page in his Machzor!

The title page and verso feature the Rebbe’s autograph dated Erev Rosh Hashanah, 1970.

The Admor Harav Yechezkel Shraga Lifschitz Halberstam of Stropkov (1908-1995) was the son of Harav Yissachar Dov Lifschitz of Ungvar (of the Vizhnitz dynasty). He was raised in the lap of his esteemed grandfather Harav Avraham Shalom of Stropkov who invested his heart and soul into the child. Harav Yechezkel Shraga was renowned as a brilliant Torah luminary and prolific author, and he was appointed Av Beis Din of Jablonka in 1932. When the Nazis stormed his village, he was taken along with the members of his community to Auschwitz where he miraculously survived while steadfastly observing the mitzvos. After the Holocaust, he served as Rav in Bamberg where he assisted and supported countless survivors and worked intensively to free war agunos. In 1949, he journeyed to Eretz Yisrael and settled there.

Machzor for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with Korban Aharon. Vilna 1882. Features translated commentary in Hebrew. Size: 28 cm. Pages shredded at margins. Used.
