Andy Warhol, Attributed: Sam The Cat
Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) Attributed: Sam The Cat. Pen, ink, and watercolor on toned paper, signed, unframed.
In the 1950s, Andy Warhol worked as a freelance children’s-book illustrator while sharing a Lexington Avenue apartment with his mother and, purportedly, 25 cats. Warhol created colorful lithographs of the felines in his spare time. In 1954, the artist released the drawings, accompanied by his mother’s calligraphy, in the limited-edition book 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy.

Andrew Warhola was an American artist, director and producer who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertising that flourished by the 1960s, and span a variety of media, including painting, silkscreening, photography, film, and sculpture.
