Inscription in the Jewish National Fund Golden Book - in Memory of the 35 Hagganah Members - by the Important Activist Reb Pinchas Margaliyot - signature of Rabbi Meir Berlin - [1948]
This certificate attesting to an inscription in the "Golden Book" of the Jewish National Fund was donated in memory of the 35 Hagganah members, the well-known "Lamed He" (the convoy of 35). The thirty five fighters were killed during the War of Independence on their way to the besieged Gush Etzion. Many songs and stories commemorated their famous story. The certificates notes the names of all thirty five fighters.
In order to identify the slain soldiers, Rabbi Arye Levin conducted the "Goral Hagra". In the presence of three Talmidei Chachamim, headed by Rabbi Arye Levin, the Bible was opened at random. Amazingly, the verses in a miraculous manner matched the names of the slain soldiers. A full description of the event can be found in the book "Ish Tzaddik Haya" by Simcha Raz.
The certificate was donated by Reb Pinchas Margaliyot, a buyer of lands and activist of the Ha'Mizrachi Movement. Among others, he ought the lands of Kefar Etzion. During one of his transactions, the Arabs murdered his son-in-law, Aharon Solomon (16) and robbed his money.
The certificate is hand-signed by Avraham [Granot] Granovsky, the chairman of the Jewish National Fund, one of the signatories of the Scroll of Independence and a member of the first and second Knesset and by Rabbi Meir Berlin, the leader of Ha'Mizrachi Movement and one of the heads of Zionism.
