Dr. Ephraim Chizkiyahu Bonus (1599-1656) was an eminent figure in the Jewish community of Holland in the first half of the 17th century. He was a known physician in the community, a close friend of Rabbi Menashe ben Yisrael and of Rembrandt, who drew his portrait. He was a descendent of a family of converso which came to Amsterdam from Portugal and returned to their Judaism.
Dr. Bonus was also a Bible researcher and founded with Reb Avraham Ferrara the scientific society of "Torah Or" in Amsterdam.
The engraving is the creation of the Dutch painter Jan Lievens (1607-1674), whose painting style is similar to that of Rembrandt.
The portrait depicts Bonus in his twilight days, with a skullcap on his head and his hat in his hand.
The following Latin inscription appears under the portrait: "D. EPHRAIM BONVS, HEBRAEVS. Alter Aventooar grandi sub judice magnus in medicis" magni discipulus que patris".
Framed.
Condition: Very Good.
