Letter requesting help to save Jews from the Shoah, handwritten and signed by Rabbi Nachum Mordechai Friedman of Chortkov, 1944

A chilling letter on plain notebook paper with a stamp on top, written entirely by hand and signed by the Admor Rabbi Nachum Mordechai Friedman of Chortkov, from the 22nd of Kislev 1943/44, addressed to “my friend the Rahag public servant president of Agudas Yisrael Itzi Meir HaKohen [Rabbi Yitzhak Meir haKohen Levin]…”. He asks him emotionally “this is a request that I heard from someone who shared this with me, Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh Leib Komin is already in Romania, please save him from Gehenim[!], our friend expects the mercy of heaven.” With his signature. [1] leaf. 13.5x21cm. Filing holes, creases, stains, and slight tears. Overall good condition.

The Admor Rabbi Nachum Mordechai (1874-1946) was the son of Rabbi Israel of Chortkov, and grandson of Rabbi David Moshe of Chertkov, great grandson of the Rabbi of Rozin. He was son-in-law of his uncle Admor Rabbi Shlomo ben Rabbi Avraham Yaakov (the first) of Sadigura. In World War I he was exiled with many of his extended Ruzhin family to Vienna, from which he fled after the Anschluss (the annexation by Germany) and then moved to Israel. He settled in Tel Aviv and passed away in 1946, a little after WWII, from the pain caused by the Shoah.
