Letter handwritten and signed by the Admor the Damesek Eliezer of Vizhnitz. Tammuz 1944

Letter on official letterhead, handwritten and signed by Admor Rabbi Eliezer Hager of Vizhnitz. From the 28th of Tammuz 1944, just before the end of the war a little after moving to Israel. Addressed to David Sichi, in which he expresses interest and references technical details such as a mortgage he has to organize and amounts he received from people. On the back of the page he wrote some notes that aren’t clear, probably a hint to the addressee (something he would do in that period for fear of censorship and mail reading). At the end he writes: “I saw the news from Hungary and we need to shout to increase the certificates for them. Hashem have mercy on the survivors.”

This letter was probably intended for Rabbi David Appel of Tel Aviv, father of the attorney Shmuel Appel, sent from Haifa since he lived there at the time and he writes at the beginning “The air is very good here, I am enjoying it.” He mentions Rabbi Nissan Lev Tov, a chassid of Vizhnitz in Haifa, and Rabbi Zvi Hershel Weiselman, a chassid of Vizhnitz in Tel Aviv, as well as Rabbi Yaakov Schechter, the owner of the hostel in Tel Aviv and father of the Schechter family descended from Chassidei Gur (thanks to Haim Meir Ovitz for his help).

Admor Rabbi Eliezer Hager (1891-1946) was the son of Admor Ahavat Yisrael of Vizhnitz. His maternal grandfather was the Imrei Noam of Dzikov. He was a great talmid chachm, an Admor and Rosh Yeshiva in Vizhnitz. He was certified by the Maharsham of Berezan and Rabbi Shmuel Engel of Radomisla. In 1922 he was crowned rabbi of Vizhnitz during his father’s lifetime, and a year later he established the Vizhnitz yeshiva there and led it. After his father’s death in 1936 he began to serve as Admor. In 1940 he escaped Vizhnitz, which was conquered by the Russians, and settled in Timisoara. He tried his utmost to help save his Jewish brethren, he sent food and support for Jews exiled to the marshes of Transylvania, who were led by his brother the Mekor Baruch of Seret Vizhnitz, and he sold his possessions to do so. He managed to escape to Israel on the 26th of Nissan 1944, and then established the Vizhnitz yeshiva in Tel Aviv. A few months later he placed his nephew in charge, Rabbi Moshe Yehoshua Hager (later Admor Yeshuot Moshe of Vizhnitz). A little later he became ill and stayed at the Babad Hotel in Jerusalem, until his death in 1946. He is buried on Mt. of Olives next to the ohel of Admorei Rachmastrivka. He did not have any descendants and after his death his followers divided between his brothers, who moved to Israel. Streets in Bnei Brak and Rehovot are named after him.
