And the Children will Return to their Border - Historic Announcement of the Opening of Rachel's Tomb
Exciting historic poster announcing the opening of Rachel's Tomb for Jewish prayers. Zuckerman Press, Jerusalem, c. 1930. Rare poster, not found in the poster collection at the National Library.
During the period of the 1929 riots, the British authorities forbade Jews from visiting Rachel's Tomb due to the security situation. In the announcement before us, apparently printed in 1930 with receipt of permission to again visit the tomb, it is written that it would open on Rosh Chodesh Elul and the attendants caution those who visit not to sleep there.
Over the years, the attendants at Rachel's Tomb would open it to the general public only on Rosh Chodesh, during Elul and the holidays, and for special occasions. Yet after the 1929 riots, Rachel's Tomb was closed completely. Rabbi Kook summoned the attendant R' Shlomo Freiman, and demanded that he open Rachel's Tomb on a daily basis so that pilgrimage to the grave never cease. The rabbi instructed him to continue to take the risk of endangering himself by going to Rachel's Tomb, and even if no one comes, he is to continue to open it in order to establish the Jewish people's hold on the place. It is known that Rabbi Kook actively worked hard so that people could pray there, yet apparently, according to the poster's content, the tomb was not yet regularly open every day of the week.
[1] leaf paper, 22x33 cm. Printed in green ink. Handwritten signature. Government postage stamp affixed to the poster before it was printed.
