Lengthy Responsum by the Gaon Rabbi Rephael HaLevi, Author of Kol Ben Levi. [Izmir, C. 1720]

Responsum on the topic of one who swore to not do a mitzvah, handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Rephael HaLevi, author of Kol Ben Levi. The responsum before us was printed in the book Nechpah BaKessef Part II, pp 239-246. This may be the only surviving manuscript by the wondrous sage and gaon who passed away in his youth.

Rabbi Yonah Navon, one of the leading sages of Jerusalem and rosh yeshivah of Knesset Yisrael [which was founded by Rabbeinu Chaim Ben Attar] was also known as the Chid"a's teacher. He cites in his book Nechpah BaKessef a correspondence on the topic of one who swore to not do a mitzvah. The one who asked is Rabbi Shlomo ibn Ezra, and there he quotes this lengthy responsum by Rabbi Rephael HaLevi, and then the words of Rabbi Yonah Navon on the topic, and again the correspondence between them.

Rabbi Rephael HaLevi was very young when he asked his question to Rabbi Yonah Navon. Rabbi Yonah responds to him: "Kindred spirit, wise rabbi, most praised, the honorable Rabbi Rephael HaLevi, I so much enjoy discussing Torah with him, may it only continue ... and I therefore love him so much, and I have gone out of my way to change this chapter per his request even though I am very busy ..."

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of Rabbi Rephael HaLevi.
