HANS-ULRICH RUDEL
(1916-1982) German ground-attack pilot during World War II, most decorated German serviceman as the sole recipient of the Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. Typed letter signed, 1 page, 8.25 x 5.75 in. on his personal letterhead, Kufstein/Tirol, May 5, 1981. In part: '...My dear Weinsheimer, on 30.5. is the squadron meeting. In the 'Huettenberger Buergerstuben'. 8 km south of Giessen...if you come, please request Herrn [Guenther] Just, to come along. I will receive hundreds of congratulatory wishes for my birthday. I thought of a card for responses, which can maybe show of current picture of me in the upper corner... against payment of course...I have a long, strenuous trip to South America behind me.- The pigs have vandalized our monument again...more face to face.' Boldly signed at conclusion in blue ink. Enclosed is an example of his personal pre-printed response card, thanking the recipient for the wishes for his birthday. On the cover of the card, in opposite corners, are two stylized golden oak leaves with swords topped by a star, symbolizing his highest award, the Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds, of which he was the only recipient. Mailing fold, file holes at top.
