[Dorotheus, Abba of Palestine (Dorotheus of Gaza, Greek. Δωρόθεος τῆς Γάζης; 505-565 or 620) is a Christian Saint. Venerated as a monk, the memory is celebrated in the Orthodox Church on June 18 (June 5 according to the Julian calendar), in the Jerusalem and Hellas Orthodox churches, the memory of the monk Dorotheus is celebrated on August 13; in the Catholic Church — on June 5.

Abba Dorotheus is famous for its literary legacy: teachings (21), messages (number 10) and the recording of responses elders Barsanuphius the Great and John the Prophet on questions of the monk Dorotheos (number 87). The works of Abba Dorotheus are classics of ascetic literature, studied by monks and lay people as a source of analysis of the thoughts and movements of the Christian soul. The writings of Abba Dorotheus are included in the 88th volume of Patrologia Graeca.

The monk Dorotheus was originally from Ascalon and spent his early youth with his family in Gaza. He studied secular Sciences; perhaps his teacher was Procopius of Gaza. Dorotheus 'family was well-off (in the life of the monk Dositheus, a disciple of Abba Dorotheus, it is reported that Dorotheus' brother used his own funds to build a hospital in the monastery of Abba serida). The reasons that prompted Dorotheus to leave the world and enter a monastery are unknown, as well as the age at which he took vows. It is known that he did not take monastic vows immediately, but lived for some time near the monastery, using the funds of his large inheritance.

After entering the monastery of St. Serid, Dorotheus became a cell-Keeper of St. John the Prophet and was his novice for ten years. His main obedience in the monastery was the reception of pilgrims, to which he showed great patience and zeal. He was the mentor of the monk Dositheus. Not earlier than 540, after the death of Abbot Abba Serid and Saint John the Prophet, Dorotheus retired from Abba Serid's dormitory. A possible reason for this was the desire of the brethren to elect him Abbot, which he humbly refused. Soon other monks began to settle near Dorotheus, and He founded his own monastery, which he was Abbot until his death.]
