Kazimir Malevich Attr.: Self Portrait.
Kazimir Malevich (Russian, 1878 - 1935) Attributed: Self Portrait, water color and gouache on paper. Signed lower left. Unframed.
The painting hasn't been sent to any authority for an opinion. However, we've studied it and believe that the style compares well with the artist's circa 1910 self portraits https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/exhibition/malevich/malevich-room-guide/malevich-room-1 and that the materials are appropriate for a painting of that age. One of the tests we did on the painting was to compare the paper via near infra-red spectrography (NIR) to a database of historic paper spectra samples we created for our conservation lab. https://woodshedgallery.com/WoodshedGallery/scientific-examination-of-art/ The best match we had for the paper of this watercolor was paper from a print dated 1926. This indicates that the paper likely existed prior to 1926 and would be possibly 10-15 years older than that.
The above info led us to attribute the painting.
Kazimir Malevich was a Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist, whose pioneering work and writing had a profound influence on the development of non-objective, or abstract art, in the 20th century. 12 x 9 inches paper.
