SOMERSET FITZROY: (1788-1855) 1st Baron Raglan. British Field Marshal, commanded the British troops during the Crimean War. Raglan gave the order which led to the Charge of the Light Brigade. A.L.S., FitzRoy Somerset, one page, 4to, Freneda, 4th December 1812, to Sir Charles Stuart. Following the desire expressed by his correspondent Somerset returns 'several deciphered letters (no longer present) which Lord Castlereagh was anxious to have returned to him after Lord Wellington had perused them'. Some extremely minor, light age wear and a couple of small stains at the head of the page, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Charles Stuart (1779-1845) British Diplomat, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Portugal and Brazil 1810-14. British Ambassador to France 1815-24, 1828-30 and British Ambassador to Russia 1841-44. Viscount Castlereagh (1769-1822) Anglo-Irish Statesman, Foreign Secretary 1812-22 and a central figure in the coalition which defeated Napoleon. FitzRoy Somerset served as both aide-de-camp (from 1808) and military secretary (from 1810) to the Duke of Wellington.
