Booklet Issued by the Jewish Community of Mantua – The Visit of Princess Isabella of Parma and Joseph II Archduke of Austria to the Jewish Ghetto – Italy, 1761
Nel felicissimo passaggio di sua altezza reale Madama Isabella infanta di Spagna &c. &c. meritissima sposa di sua altezza reale il serenissimo arciduca Giuseppe d'Austria &c. &c. &c. per la citta di Mantova illuminazione del ghetto degli ebrei di detta città. Verona: Agostino Carattoni, 1761. Italian.
A booklet issued by the Jewish community of Mantua for the visit of the couple Isabela, Princess of Parma, and Joseph II, Archduke of Austria (the future Holy Roman Emperor) to the Jewish ghetto in 1760. The Jewish community held lavish celebrations to mark the visit, the entire ghetto was lit up, a special orchestra was hired and sculptures and ornaments were places in the streets and plazas. In addition, the community printed a program with words of praise from Jewish sources, and put on a festive play for the royal couple, which cost the community a fortune (see: Shlomo Simonsohn, The History of the Jews in the Duchy of Mantua, Hebrew edition, Vol. I, Jerusalem, 1962. p. 129).
An engraved plate at the end of the book (depicting the sculptures and ornaments that were placed in the ghetto) is missing.
XXIV pp., approx. 29.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains. Tears and minor blemishes to edges. The four final leaves are detached. Ornate contemporary paper cover, worn and scuffed.
