בשנת 1947 היו ביישוב כ-6000 חולים בשחפת ולכן התכנסו חברי הליגה למלחמה בשחפת לכנס דחוף בתל אביב והוחלט על שורת צעדים למיגור המחלה ביניהם הוחלט להקים מרפאות אזוריות שיצוידו במכשירי רנטגן לשיקוף ריאות.
במזכר שפורסם ברחבי המדינה נתנו הוראות מדויקות על הדרך בה יש לאבחן את השחפת ולטפל בה.
