Known as one of the greatest exponents of Russian art at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, he was born in Ukraine and then later moved to St. Petersburg where he studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. The first years of his artistic career are characterized by an academic style painting that is slowly abandoned thanks to the many journeys that allow him to know the newest pictorial innovations, in particular those made by the French impressionists. The colors of his palette come from a new vibrancy, luminosity and the chromatic range expands, while the historical subjects are gradually overcome to make room for scenes of real life and portraiture. His participation in the “Ambulanti” group confirms his choice to open up to European pictorial innovations. Despite this, his paintings will never abandon theirs clarity in the description of his subjects.
