Novella on Tractate Beitzah by R. Peretz Zavel Eiger, who was a cousin and
confidante of R. Akiva Eiger. With approbations of both R. Akiva Eiger and the
Chasam Sofer, as well as some novella of both of the above.
Inscribed in a hand from that era, (with edges closely shaved affecting edge
of text) “belonging to our master the great Gaon … Raban Shel Kol Bnei
Hagolah…. R. (Akiva) Eiger of Posen, signed Meir of Lissa”. With additional
library stamps of R. Yitzchak Leib Eiger of Johannesburg, son of R. Akiva
Eiger.
R. Akiva Eiger-Ginz (1761-1836) was born in Eisenstadt into a rabbinical
family and was well known as a child prodigy. He studied in the Yeshiva
of Mattersdorf, and following that in Breslau as a student of his maternal
uncle R. Wolf Eiger. In 1791 he was appointed as Rav of Friedland where he
remained until 1815 following which he became the Rav of Posen. World
renowned as an outstanding Talmudic scholar, influential halachic decisor
and foremost leader of European Jewry during the early 19th century.
Among his children were his two sons, R. Avrohom (1781-1853) and R.
Shlomo (1785-1852) who was Rav in Kalisz, Poland and succeeded R.
Akiva Eiger as Rav of Posen. His daughter Sorel (Eiger) Sofer (1790-1832)
was the wife of the Chasam Sofer.
