Pair of Fukagawa Imari Chargers, Published
From our Japanese Collection, a very fine assembled pair of Fukagawa imari porcelain chargers, Meiji Period (1868-1912). The blue Koransha mark on the reverse dates these more specifically to circa 1875-1880. One charger depicts figures set against a field of tall bamboo grass executed in mostly gilt and blue, along with very subtle use of green, orange and pink, while the second charger depicts just the bamboo grass. Both have scrolling floral sprays / karakusa in blue and orange on the reverse. The second charger with just the bamboo grass is a published piece, see Japanese Export Ceramics 1860-1920, by Nancy Schiffer, page 36. These chargers were not originally created together as a true pair, but due to their obvious complimentary nature, we have decided to pair them where together they make a dramatic statement.
(Please note that there is a typographical error in the Schiffer book regarding the price of the published charger. We believe the author meant to list "2,900" and not "12,900" as the price of the 2nd charger.)
Size and Condition: 15 inches in diameter. Essentially perfect condition. There is a tiny spot on the 3 o’clock position on the second charger where the glaze appears to have “crawled” (not adhered), but this is a minor firing flaw original to the piece, and not really considered damage. We mention it for accuracy and completeness.
