LILLIAN HELLMAN
(1905 - 1984) American dramatist and screenwriter known for her success as a playwright on Broadway, as well as her Communist sympathies and political activism. Great content T.L.S. on her personal letterhead, 1p. 8vo., New York, June 2, 1978, an argumentative letter to her agent, Abbott von Nostrand, and publishing company, Samuel French Inc. In part: '...you will now release me from all contractual obligations where Samuel French, Inc. has represented me...In turn, I agree to buy from you, at $1.00 a piece, the 1,600 [unsold] copies of 'Toys in the Attic'. (Incidentally...you [earlier] mentioned 800 copies. It is interesting that for a play you did not seem to sell very well, the number went up to 1,600. But never mind.)...I regret the trouble we had through the years and I am sure you do too...'. Signed at the conclusion. Double-matted with her portrait, then framed. Staple holes, else fine condition.
