Sefer Hamidot. First Edition. A Book on Ethics by of one of the most central Maskilim.

First Edition.

By Naftali Hirtz Wiesel.
Berlin 1786. Printed by Chevrat Chinuch Nearim.

First edition of a Book on Ethics by one of the most central Maskilim –
disciple and friend of Moshe Mendelson, the founder of the Jewish
Enlightenment movement in Germany.
Naftali Hirtz, the son of Yissachar Ber Wiesel, was one of Moshe
Mendelson's disciples, the founder of the Maskilim, who tried to reform
German Jewry in the 18 th century. Mendelson’s writings 'The Biur' on the
Bible, and later on the Prayers, brought upon him a 'ban for generations'. Europe's Ashkenazi Rabbis naturally went out against him and his interpretations of the 'Biur', claiming that they contained interpretations of Germany's Maskilim that contradict Jewish tradition and beliefs. The Chasam Sofer and his disciples were greatly opposed to him, but the Italian sages sided with him.
Wiesel was also the author of 'The Levanon' and 'Yayin Halevanon' and assisted his teacher, Moshe Mendelson, in compiling the 'Biur'.
Regarding Jewish Enlightenment, refer to the Machzorim in this catalogue with the signature annotations of Rabbi Mattisyahu Hakohen
Munk.
