Computerized Jewish Book Otzar: Item no. 91902.

This book is in French with liturgical poems in Hebrew, including the “Chad Gadya” poem. The customs of the Jews of Provence during the Middle Ages, were translated into the Provencal language which was the language of the Jews of Provence. Don Pedro the Second, who was the King of Brazil, translated this. After 49 years of sovereignty, Don Pedro was deposed and he transplanted to France. Don Pedro was an expert in many languages and had an affinity for the Jews. As a devout Christian he recognized Judaism as the root of Christianity. While still King, Don Pedro travelled to the Land of Israel, out of love for the Land and its Holy Places. In his book: “Don Pedro the Second and the Jewish Influence in Brazil” (printed 2014), Bisker Arony describes this fascinating trip to Palestine along with the royal entourage.
This copy was part of the Baroness of Wirtenburg’s library. The inner binding includes a magnificent colored ex-libris of Duke Claudine Rehadi von Kiche – Rahada. The binding is similarly decorated with the Duke’s insignia. Original gild edges. As far as we know, this library was dispersed during the Second World War.
