Two Prayer Books with Magnificent Tusk Binding!
Beautiful.
1. Small Prayer Book with Mincha Prayer.
Prague 1910.
Hebrew and German.
Size 10cm.
Tusk binding, decorated with gold-colored and nickel-colored metal stripes, with a lock in the center.
Stunning condition.
2. Tefillot Yisrael Prayer Book
Printed in Vienna 1898. By the famed Yosef Schlesinger Printers.
Hebrew and German. Size 18.5cm
Splendid condition. Beautiful Tusk binding, set with gold-colored metal strips, and metal strips set with sea-shell pieces.
At the end of the 19th century metal craftsmen began to produce tusk substitutes from chemical elements. Initially they produced ‘synthetic tusk’ from percassin, and then from celluloid and/or baklit materials. These two bindings are produced from such striking ‘synthetic Tusk’ materials with golden and silvery decorations.
Very few Prayer Books from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century have been preserved in such wonderful condition, including locks that remain fully intact.
