Four Halachic Letters Handwritten by Rabbi Zelig Reuven Bengis, from the Time He was the Rabbi of Kalvarija - Has Never been Printed - Very Rare!
Four long halachic responses handwritten and signed by Rabbi Zelig Reuven Bengis, in time, Rosh Av Beit Din of Ha'Edah Ha'Haredit in Jerusalem. The letters were sent to Rabbi Aharon Milevsky and were written on the official stationery of Rabbi Bengis. These letters were written while he was a rabbi in Lithuania, before he immigrated to Israel. Letters from this time are extremely rare. Most letters that are sold in auctions were written by the Rabbi when he was in Israel and are not of halachic content.

A. A letter from Cheshvan 1933. The content of the letter is "a woman who married an ostracized person, whom the rabbis had forbidden to marry, and later received Kidushin from another".
The letter is written on both sides of the leaf. The original envelope with Rabbi Bengis' handwriting is added. Rabbi Milevsky's response is also added.
B. A letter from 1934 about the words of the Yerushalmi on cooking a Nevelah on a Yom Tov.
A leaf written on both its sides. The original envelope is added.
C. An important, interesting letter from Kislev 1937, about matters of Agunot. In the letter, Rabbi Bengis states modestly that he "cannot rule Halacha Le'Ma'aseh on the serious matters of Igunei De'Orayta" and his words are therefore only "Pilpula Be'Alma".
A leaf written on both its sides. The original envelope with Rabbi Bengis' handwriting is added as well as Rabbi Milevsky's response.
D. A letter from Tevet 1937 on the above matter of Hatarat Agunot.
A leaf written on both its sides.

The letters has not been printed.

Rabbi Reuven Bengis (1864-1953). Already as a youth, he was known as a great prodigy and "was most knowledgeable in the Talmud and the Poskim" (the words of Rabbi Shlomo Ha'Cohen, author of "Cheshek Shlomo"). He studied at the Volozhin Yeshiva and was considered a genius.
During his lifetime, Rabbi Bengis served as a rabbi in several towns in Lithuania. He spent 19 years as Rav of Boćki (Bodki), there he started publishing his well-known books "Li'Flagot Reuven". In 1911 he became the Rav of Kalvarija, Lithuania. When World War I broke out, the Russian government forced Jews to move further eastward and Rabbi Bengis settled in Smolensk. He returned to Kalvarija in 1922. In 1938, he immigrated to the Land of Israel and served as Rosh Av Beit Din of Ha'Edah Ha'Haredit in Jerusalem. From 1949 until his death he served as Gaon Av Beit Din.
