Libri IV. de Sepulchris Hebraeorum by Johann Nicolai. Leiden: Henricum Teering, 1706. First edition. Latin and some Hebrew.
A study of Jewish burial customs by Johann Nicolai (1665-1708), a philologist and professor of classical studies at the Tübingen University. The book includes ten engravings depicting Jewish tombstones and graves (eight plates and two in-text engravings; one folded engraved plate is missing). Additional in-text illustrations and sketches. Three of the engravings integrate printed pieces of paper, which when lifted reveal the interior design of the crypts.
[8] ff., 285, [2] pp. + [8] engraved plates (missing one folded engraved plate), 21 cm. Good condition. Stains. Some small tears, not affecting text. Creases. Minor blemishes. Vellum-covered boards, with minor blemishes.
