A commitment to pay membership dues for the Eida Charedit signed by Dr. Yaakov Yisrael Dahan—Jerusalem 1920.
Small piece of paper with a written commitment to pay membership dues for the Eida Charedit, founded in 1918-19, shortly after which it began to accept members. This note, from 1920, is from one of its first paying members.
Dr. Yisrael Yaakov Dahan (1881-1924) was a talented jurist, journalist, and publicist, who was a baal tshuva and joined the Eida Charedit where he helped to promote the organization and helped it in its relationship with Zionists, the British Mandate authorities, and the Muslim world. The pinnacle of his work was the famous meeting between Rabbi Yosef Haim Zonnenfeld and King Abdallah of Transjordan. His work represented a thorn in the side of the Zionist organizations, particularly the Haganah, who assassinated him in 1924.
