Handwritten & Signed Letter by Rabbi Mordechai Benet
Handwritten letter by Rabbi Mordechai Benet (also Bennet or Banet), “Maharam Benet”. The letter is written to the leaders of a Jewish community, apparently in response to a question about disagreements regarding a Rabbi in their community. Benet Greets the leaders, and later praises the Rabbi (“he is sharp and knows the Torah wonderfully”), and decide that the Rabbi should be remain in his office (“and you shall hold the man you chose”). Bent ends the letter with the blessing “all will say peace, and everything peace, and Peace on Israel).
Rabbi Mordechai Bennet (1753-1829), Rabbi of Nikolsburg and chief Rabbi of Moravia, authority on Jewish law, and Kabbalist. He is considered to be one of the great rabbis of his time. Teacher of some of the leading rabbis of the generation, and a disciple of Ha’Noda B'Yehudah. The Chatam Sofer, who was ordained by Bennet, described him in his eulogy as the leader of the generation, an expert in the entire Talmud and the only son of the Divine Presence”.
Leaf written in Hebrew on one side. Clean writing, except for a few words at the end of the letter. Clear signature. Circa late 18th century. Approximately 20X18 cm. Average condition, stains, creases, few small holes, wear.
