This volume in the Hermitage catalogue is dedicated to paintings by artists born in England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and the United States, whose work cannot be imagined in isolation from English art. The book consists of two parts: the first contains information on 135 paintings by British artists dating from the 16th-19th centuries, and the second is devoted to the War Gallery of the Winter Palace, whose portraits were painted by J.Dow and his assistants who came from London. Thus the catalogue follows the structure of the similar editions of 1969 and 1990, which preceded it. Largely based on their materials, this book significantly differs from them. It presents information about the paintings as fully as possible, including more detailed technical characteristics and clarified provenance, providing information accumulated by Russian and foreign specialists, the results of new scientific research and archival studies. Readers will find in the catalogue new attributions, previously unpublished information and rich illustrative material. The publication is intended first of all for specialists, but it might be interesting for a wider circle of people interested in art, the history of Russian-British relations and Russian military history
