Dec 8, 2021
3B, 1st Lyusinovsky Lane, Moscow (Sherwood Tenement Building), Russia

[Unique Collection] Italian painting of the XVII century / Vsevolzhskaya S.N.
St. Petersburg: Hermitage Publishing House, 2013.
344 p., coloured ill. 22.5x27.5 cm.

Illustrated publisher's binding. Excellent preservation.

The Hermitage's collection of 17th-century Italian paintings is one of the most important outside Italy. All schools of art are represented, with Bologna and Rome occupying a special place among them. The museum has canvases by the most famous Bolognese masters of that time - Carracci brothers, Guido Renia, Domenichino, Gvercino, Albani and Franceschini. The diversity of culture in Rome, which became the main centre of European cultural life, is reflected in the works of a wide range of painters, representatives of very different trends and genres - Caravaggio and his followers, as well as Pietro da Cartona, Giovanni Romanelli, Carlo Maratti and others. The Hermitage collection is also considerably enriched by canvases by the masters of the Neapolitan and Genoese schools and the art centers of Northern Italy. In the Hermitage exposition, you can see only a part of the paintings. The present catalogue gives us the most complete idea of the composition and character of the entire collection of Italian paintings of this period. Along with the well-known paintings, it includes many works published for the first time. The catalogue is intended for art historians, specialists in museum studies, artists, and collectors.
