Dec 8, 2021
3B, 1st Lyusinovsky Lane, Moscow (Sherwood Tenement Building), Russia

[Catalogue of the Collection] Corinthian vases and their antique imitations / Bukina A.G.
St. Petersburg: Hermitage Publishing House, 2015.
456 p., coloured illustration. 22x27 cm.

In the illustrated publisher's binding. Excellent condition.

The Hermitage has the most significant collection in Eastern Europe of painted clay vases from the 7th-4th centuries BC, both in one piece and fragmented, which were produced in the workshops of the ancient Greek city of Corinth. The catalogue describes all the monuments, both those on display at the museum and those in permanent storage. The works of the leading pottery artists are analyzed in detail, as well as examples of everyday utensils and votive miniatures. These objects have been found during excavations of ancient cities in various parts of the Mediterranean and the South of Russia (including Crimea and the Taman Peninsula), and they are an invaluable source of information for archaeologists and historians of ancient art. The structure of the catalogue follows a typological-chronological principle. It takes into account the diversity of production of Corinthian pottery of different times. A special section is devoted to the products of ancient Greek potters (Attica, Boeotia, islands near the coast of modern Turkey) and Italian (south of the Apennines, Etruria) in which the Corinthian pottery is clearly imitated. The introductory article in the catalogue looks at the history of Corinth and local pottery, the history of the study of Corinthian vases and their antique imitations in modern times, and also the history of the formation and research of the collection in question. The catalogue is intended for art historians, specialists in museum studies, artists, collectors, and anyone interested in the art of the ancient world.
