A WOOD SCULPTURE WITH SHO KANNON
Japan, Nanbokucho period, 14th century
The divinity - sculpted in a single block of hinoki cypress (ichiboku zukuri technique) - depicted standing, the legs in a dynamic pose, arms folded to the chest, one hand holding a lotus flower, wide and elegantly draped dress, on the head a crown enriched with golden metal inserts, the face with a determinate and soothing expression, crystal eyes; wood box with inscription.
28 cm high
Provenance: Italian private collection.
The inscription on the box, signed by Kano Tessai (1845-1925) and dated 1918, refers to Keishu as the author of the work, a great sculptor nephew of Tankei and active in the period in which this work was actually realized.
