Born in Hanoi in Vietnam, Cheong Soo Pieng is considered one of the founding fathers of modern painting in Singapore, where he moved in 1946. After completing his studies in China, at the end of the war he established himself as one of the protagonists of the pictorial renewal in Southeast Asia, creating works in which echoes of tradition are mixed with the introjection of international models. His works is also highly appreciated for the poetic ability with which he manages to describe the places and people he portrayed.
