Broadway & 5th Avenue Omnibus Tin Toy
Made by the George Brown Company of Forestville, Ct. - Late 1870's 12 3/4" Long x 7 1/2" Tall. During the Reconstruction Era that followed the Civil War, the American population began to shift from rural areas to urban areas. All across America, new cities sprang up and existing cities began to experience an unprecedented level of growth. This massive rapid influx of people to the cities required new forms of transportation to be invented that could accommodate the needs of the inhabitants. The "omnibus" is one such carriage form. It was capable of ferrying upwards of 20 people around town. American tin toy collectors value this mechanical toy omnibus as one of the finest early toys ever created.
