WWII ALLIED HIGH COMMISSION BUILDING PLAQUE
One-of-a-kind 'Allied High Commission' for Occupied Germany building sign rescued from Germany after WWII, probably saved from the Hotel Petersberg in Bonn after the dissolution of the High Commission in 1955. The sign is adorned with three shields representing the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and France. The enameled shields are set into brass frames and with brass lettering attached to a metal sheet 3.75 x 14.5 inches. The bottom tips of the UK and French seal are slightly dented. The colors are very vibrant. The Allied High Commission (also known as the High Commission for Occupied Germany, HICOG; Alliierte Hohe Kommission, AHK) was established by the United States, the United Kingdom, and France after the 1948 breakdown of the Allied Control Council to regulate and supervise the development of the newly established Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). The Commission took its seat at the Hotel Petersberg near Bonn and started its work on September 21, 1949. It ceased to function under the terms of the Bonn–Paris conventions, on May 5, 1955.
