Ancient Korean Rarity Jeweled Silver Censor
As excavated, never even washed and that is mostly hiding its details and merits.From the Unified Silla Dynasty, 676 AD - 935 AD, , a unique and highly individual jeweled silver censor. This could clean up and be rather spectacular, .. all the time of owning it, I just assumed it a bronze, .. no, completely cast and worked in silver, the body with four allegorical animals in relief, up on four tapered legs, both sides of the bulbous body with vertical rows of three large domed jewels, two of white jade and a central deep blue lapis stone. The original fitted and pierced cover for incense burning has four similar jewels, two of fine green jade and two of that same lapis. The cover has a high relief 'rope' handle that matches the ones on either side. In purpose and style, most likely crafted in either the former Kingdom of Paekche or the third of the Silla Kingdom's unification, the former northerly Kingdom of Koguryo, as these three former kingdoms made up the whole of previously feudal Korea. Such a vessel would likely have made up part of the tribute necessary to be paid to the conquering and thence ruling Silla, after 676 AD.Surely unique, cleaned up, this will eventually wind up in a museum, or auction with a number of added 0's. 6" wide x 5 1/2" high. ******This item from a local elder, up until now, a very active, eclectic and constant collector for them past 62 years. Due to recent health news, he has chosen our gallery to undertake the start of the disposal of his formidable collections of over 25,000 -of good to rare things covering mostly fine to rare antiques and art properties, mostly never seen or offered, from all the many world cultures and all age periods, paleolithic to modern.
